JB to Melaka One-Way Road Trip Guide: Route and Stops
The drive from Johor Bahru to Melaka is about 210 kilometres, and most of it is one straight run up the North-South Expressway. The route itself is easy. The harder question is what to do with the car once you arrive in Melaka.
A one-way rental answers that question, because you collect the car in Johor Bahru and return it in Melaka. This guide covers the JB to Melaka route, how a one-way booking works with JohorBook, where to stop along the way and what to see when you get there.
JB to Melaka by Car: Distance, Drive Time and Best Route
JB to Melaka by car is about 210 kilometres and takes around two and a half hours when traffic is light. Heavy traffic or long breaks will stretch that, so it is wise to plan for a little more.
Taking the North-South Expressway
The most direct route is the North-South Expressway Southern Route, also known as E2. Heading north from Johor Bahru, you pass the Simpang Renggam and Yong Peng interchanges before reaching the Ayer Keroh exit, which is Exit 231. Roughly 195 kilometres of the journey is on the expressway itself.
From Ayer Keroh, the Ayer Keroh Highway leads into Melaka city. Toll charges apply on the expressway, so keep your Touch 'n Go card topped up and check the current rate before you leave.
Planning Your Departure Time
If you want to reach Melaka before lunch, leave Johor Bahru by about 8 in the morning. That leaves room for one rest stop and still gives you the afternoon for sightseeing.
Travelling from Singapore adds the border crossing to your timeline. Our guide on how Singaporeans can rent a car in Johor Bahru explains what to prepare before you pick up the keys.
How One-Way Car Rental From JB to Melaka Works
A one-way rental lets you collect a car in Johor Bahru and return it in another Malaysian city, with a one-way fee that is confirmed when you book. You do not need to drive back to where you started.
Booking Your One-Way Rental
On the JohorBook booking form, enter your pick-up location, dates and times, then choose Return to another location to see the available drop-off points and their fees. You pay online, and your confirmation arrives straight away by email and WhatsApp.
The one-way rental details in our FAQ explain that the fee must be confirmed at the time of booking, so check it before you pay.
Pick-Up Points in Johor Bahru
You can collect your car at Senai International Airport, JB Sentral, the JohorBook HUB or one of our partner hotels. These include DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Johor Bahru, Fives Hotel, Holiday Inn Johor Bahru City Center and Teega Residence.
If you are landing at Senai, our Senai Airport car rental guide covers what to expect at pick-up.
Choosing a Car for the Drive
A Perodua Axia or Myvi suits two to four people with light luggage, and the Axia starts from RM135 per day. Families or groups of up to seven can look at a Perodua Alza from RM260 per day. The one-way fee is added on top of the daily rate.
All of our cars are automatic and air-conditioned, which matters on a long expressway drive. Our MPV car rental guide for families compares the larger options.
Deposit, Fuel and Cancellation Terms
A refundable security deposit is taken by card at pick-up and returned within 7 working days if the car comes back undamaged. The car must be returned with the same fuel level as at pick-up, so refuel in Melaka before you drop it off. Free cancellation applies up to 24 hours before the rental time.
The minimum age is 18, and you can add the optional Liability Reduction Option at checkout. Our 24-hour roadside support hotline is there if anything goes wrong on the road. For licence and document details, read our guide to car rental requirements in Malaysia.
Best Rest Stops (R&R) Between JB and Melaka
The best rest stops between Johor Bahru and Melaka are the three rest and service areas on the North-South Expressway: Machap, Pagoh and Ayer Keroh. Spacing your breaks across them keeps the drive comfortable.
Machap Rest and Service Area
Machap is the southernmost rest and service area on the whole expressway, about 75 kilometres into the drive. It works well as a first break if you left early. After about an hour behind the wheel, you will want to stretch your legs.
Pagoh Rest and Service Area
Pagoh is roughly 140 kilometres in, about two thirds of the way to Ayer Keroh. Facilities are separate for each direction, so make sure you take the northbound side.
Ayer Keroh Rest and Service Area
The Ayer Keroh rest and service area sits just before the Ayer Keroh interchange and has an overhead restaurant. It is the last stop before you leave the expressway. Use it to eat and to check your route into the city.
Best Places to Visit in Melaka After the Drive
Melaka's old town is compact enough to explore on foot, so these four stops fit into a single day.
Jonker Street
Jonker Street, also called Jonker Walk, runs through the old town and is lined with shops, cafes and food stalls. Walk it slowly and take a few of the side lanes as well.
Stadthuys
The red Stadthuys dates from the Dutch period and sits at the centre of the old town, so it is easy to reach on foot from Jonker Street. Stop for photos, then move on.
Melaka River Cruise
The Melaka River Cruise is a 45-minute round trip along 9 kilometres of the river. It passes Kampung Morten, the Ghost Bridge, Christ Church, Jonker Walk and the riverside murals, and boards at Taman Rempah Jetty or Muara Jetty.
Our sister site MelakaBook sells Melaka River Cruise tickets, and bookings should be made at least one day in advance. The cruise is subject to weather conditions, so keep some flexibility in your timing.
A'Famosa
A'Famosa refers to the old Portuguese fortress in Melaka town, where the Porta de Santiago gate still stands. It is a short walk from Stadthuys and works as a quick stop between the other sights.
The name is also used for a separate attraction outside the old town. A'Famosa Melaka tickets include the Water Theme Park and Safari Wonderland, which are ticketed separately and suit families with children.
Deciding Between a Day Trip and a One-Way Rental
A JB to Melaka day trip works if you are happy with around five hours of driving in total, plan to return the car in Johor Bahru and start early. A one-way rental makes more sense if you are continuing to another city or heading home by other means, because you skip the return leg.
When you are ready to book, our car rental service in Johor Bahru lets you select Return to another location, see the one-way fee and receive your confirmation by email and WhatsApp. Pair it with a river cruise ticket and the main parts of your Melaka day are already sorted.
